About the study

Why are we inviting you to take part?

We want to see if we can help you improve your oral health.


Do you have to take part?

No, you do not have to take part. You can say Yes or No, and you can even change your mind later.

What will happen if you agree let us count your teeth?

We will:

  • Use a mirror and light to count your teeth.
  • Count your teeth twice.
  • It will not hurt.
  • Share what we find with you.

You can show this to your dentist if you want.

What will happen if you agree to answer questions?

We will:

  • Ask about your teeth and toothbrushing.
  • Ask you what you think about our training.
  • We will ask this twice.

Will people know my answers?

No. Only the research team will know what you said.


What are the good things?

You will:

  • Get better mouth care.
  • Learn how to take care of your teeth.

Are there any risks?
  • The check-ups are short and safe
  • Some people find it uncomfortable when we lift their lips

What happens to the results?

We will write about the study in reports. But we won’t use your name or anything that shows who you are.

Keeping your information safe

What information will we collect?
  • Information on your birthday, health and disability

If you agree to let us look at your teeth:

  • Tooth check-up results
  • If the check-up is easy or hard
  • Notes about how your teeth are doing

If you agree to answer the questions:

  • Information about your teeth, toothbrushing and what you thought about the training.

Who sees your information?

Only the researcher and their team.


How long do we keep your information?

We make your information secret as soon as we can by making sure it cannot be linked to you.

We then keep your information for five years.

What are your rights?

You or your guardian can:

  • Ask to see your data
  • Ask us to fix it
  • Ask us to delete it (unless we’ve already published results)

Approval and support

Has the study been approved?

Yes, by Trinity College Dublin and St Michael’s House


Who is paying for the study?

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is paying for the study, supported by the National Federation of Voluntary Service Providers, Trinity College and a Brazilian university.


Do you get paid?

No. But you will get helpful information about how to get a healthy mouth.

If you say yes to taking part, we will ask for a consent form to be signed by you or someone who helps you make decisions.
